The 2nd annual fleet sail of Steel Chapman and Hutchinson 1:24 scale ships on Grand Lake MN. The fleet consists of the Frigate HMS Surprise, a top sail schooner of His Majesty's Ships, and the brig USS Syren.

The winds were light and variable but the sailing was wonderful. It is so grand to see the white sails on the water and the ships manuvering for position. The Syren has 18 working carronades and cannon and she is seen firing on Surprise. The model is exquisite in details and beautifully made.

The Top Sail Schooner is built from an SC&H brig hull and re-rigged as a schooner. It is also beautifully made with exquisite detailing.

The frigate is the largest of the fleet and today the captain had all the canvas in the locker aloft. She would maneuver in very light winds with the royals reaching for the sky and the stuns'ls catching any hint of breeze.

A most excellent day on the water. RG

  • spettacolare, veramente fantastiche

vorrei sapere se gli scafi hanno una deriva sotto la ciglia oppure no

spectacular, really amazing I would like to know if the hulls have a drift under the eyelashes or not

    thank you

  • I do not know what a "DRIFT" is but it does have a detatchable keel under the ship. The keel is 40 pounds to keep the ship upright and help it stay on course when sailing. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for your comments.

  • Hello formerparatrooper,

This beautiful video is extraordinarily realistic! I would like to know the name of "Her Majesty's ship: Captain Don, if the plan is available and where to buy it, because I am interested in building it. Thank you in advance for your reply. jccmodel

  • The ship is a kit model from SC&H in Palo Alto California, he does not sell the plans separately. My ship is HMS Surprise, Dan's brig is the Syren, and Don's topsail schooner is the Pictow. We hope to do another fleet sail this year with some new guns deployed. Stay tuned......

  • Does this version of the surprise have 28 guns?

  • Well yes and no! I have 16 working carronades on the port side with closed ports for the aft 3 on the gun deck on each side because you could not get to them. I have two long guns mounted on the bow as chasers. No guns facing aft. The model has ports for a total of 40 weapons including the chasers. If you PM me with your e-mail address I can forward you some photos. RG

  • You've answered my question. By the term "drift" mean a sort of keel fin that protrudes below the hull. Without it, the ship could remain stable? renewal compliments a really good job è un piacere vederle in navigazione

  • The black pearl!!

  • 1:24 scale or 1/2-inch to the foot. They are from 6 to 9 feet long. Mine weighs 120 pounds when ready for sailing and yes, we have a 40 pound lead keel that attaches to the ship when making ready to sail. We use a launching cart in order to get them in the water and recover them. You can see the kits and all the related information by going to SC&H ltd. web site.

  • So how big are your ship models exactly. What Is the estimated size? Do they use drop keels? I don't mean to be a bother, I am just saying what everyone else is thinking.
